This is the trekkers paradise, mixing the landscapes with colorful Maasai culture and crossing depressions with Maasai Warriors and Donkeys carrying your luggage is rewarding. Walking in the Ngorongoro wilderness is both adventurous and breathtaking. Great sceneries with great photogenic features.
The route includes:
Olmoti Crater to Empakai Highlands, down to the Great Rift Valley to Lake Natron, nature trails in the Northern Highlands Forest reserve from Olbalbal to Nasera Rock, Gol Mountains and Olkarien Gorge, Nainokanoka to Lolmalsin Mountain-3648m (the third highest in Tanzania).

This beautiful little crater contains forests and a shallow lake. This caldera is six kilometers wide and the lake occupies nearly half of its floor. At Empakai, the scenery is spectacular at every point. From the northern and eastern side you can look out to the dramatic cone of Oldonyo Lengai, the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron. Sometimes you can even see the distant snows of Mountain Kilimanjaro far on the eastern side of the valley.
It is possible to camp on the rim and hike into the crater with an armed ranger (armed against buffalos).  The best times to visit Empakai is when the weather is clear as the view of Oldonyo Lengai and the Rift Valley can be very amazing and captivating. Flocks of Flamingos on the shore of the Empakai Lake for food.
Late evening you might see the flocks migrating to other lakes along the Rift Valley.

This shallow grassy crater is the source of the Munge River, which pours through a notch in the rim in a spectacular waterfall on its way to Ngorongoro Crater. There is a very pleasant walk from Nainokanoka ranger post through the forest up to the top of the waterfall. It takes about two hours to and from Nainokanoka

Oldonyo Lengai (2878 m)

This Maasai name for the still active volcano means “Mountain of God”.  Adventurous visitors sometimes struggle up its steep slopes to visit the steaming, bubbling crater but most prefer to view its symmetrical cone from distance.

Lake Natron (soda lake)

This is a breeding site for Flamingos in Tanzania. It is worthy a walk on the shores for Flamingoes and other bird watching. This is a shallow lake.

Engaresero River -Waterfalls

This huge waterfall makes the difference between Lake Natron’s  temperature of over 40 degrees Centigrade.Swimming is possible in this river, which pours its water into Lake Natron.
